Did you know that gossip or conjecture was an essential tool for slaves? Slaves were uneducated and did not know how to read or write, so they had to rely on hearsay in order to know the goings on in the community. Booker T. Washington wrote about the importance and challenges of being assigned to go on mail runs during the slave era. It was an opportunity to find out pertinent information, which he would pass onto his family. Without it, they would have been almost clueless, particularly during the civil war era.
Today in the United States, people of all sizes. backgrounds, and cultures have FREE access to all kinds of information. We are no longer limited by hearsay or obtaining knowledge about our immediate environments, we also have access to all sorts of information around the world. Yet, most adults do not engage in a consistent habit of reading or writing, unless it pertains to work or school. People generally are disinterested, or don't have the time to research or fact check. Conjecture is the preferred source.
By George Santos own admission, much of what he revealed about himself was purposely false. This includes everything from where he worked, his heritage, where he went to school and other superficial things. One can only assume, that his main purpose was the pursue the power that comes with being elected to the House of Representatives. The have voters essentially elected a ghost: someone who does not really exist. Although people have every right to be angry with him for this mess, the truth is Santos won because he knows what I know.
-People generally do not read.
-People generally do not engage in critical thinking.
-People do not generally fact check the things that they hear.
All these resources that are available to us, and nobody knew he was lying? C'mon man! Nobody cared to check!! People blindly trusted him, now they want to complain about being duped?? Certainly nobody is making an excuse for what George did, but we cannot be mad at people for the choices we make. The FACT is, slaves had to rely on what people told them because they could not read. They could not fact check; they were illiterate and did not have the tools or resources to do so.
What is our excuse?
