They say that one is not considered a leader, unless others follow them. This sentiment is disingenuous at best, as it does not address the core principals of leadership. Leadership is less about the title or the position one holds and should not measured by mere influence alone. Social media has distorted the credentialing process for earning respect. Respect is honor that has nothing to do with the worldly trends of popularity. Today people obtain a mass following by nefarious means. Even the devil has followers… does this mean he is leader too? This is a leading cause for why people make the wrong decisions and misplace power and trust into the wrong hands. Sometimes the most popular, likable person in the room is ill equipped to get the job done!
If the way we gauge leadership is simply by the size of one’s following, then a lot of our ancestor’s work would be discredited. For example, consider Booker T. Washington. Here is a respected leader in the slavery and pre civil rights era, whose thirst for education is the sole reason we value him today! However, did you know he slept on the sidewalk in dirty clothes in an effort to get admitted into college? How many of you demonstrate respect to dirty, homeless people? My guess is you likely do not even think about whom they are or may become later on in life. If we judged Booker T. Washington and so many other overcomers by the world’s standards today, they wouldn’t be anything in many of our eyes. In other words, the lack of popularity is one reason why so many indigent folks they lack basic decency and respect. Yet, this is how many of our great leaders started out: HUMBLE BEGINNINGS.
Leadership is not about where you come from, or what you have…it’s about what you CHOOSE TO DO! Leaders can impact their environment far beyond what their title, circumstances or initial following might suggest. They are usually everyday people who demonstrate gratitude and are keenly aware of the history and facts that preceded them. This is what EMPOWERS THEM TO LEAD! A true leader understands the importance of organizing and building community, as he or she understands that both are a shared responsibility of all human beings. In short, leadership is about embodying character that promotes positive societal change for the masses, and not just for a selected few.

CHAOS Agent VS CHANGE Agent
Change and chaos both causes discomfort which sometimes makes it easy to error in deciphering the difference between the two. A key difference between chaos agents and change agents is one tends to operate strictly from a perspective of confusion. Distraction is their main goal, hoping that their perceived power becomes intertwined in so much confusion, that people forget who the real enemy is or what they are fighting for. While change agents might go through some uncomfortable situations that often lead to misunderstandings, the intentions and character of both are a quite stark in contrast: Chaos agents lead strictly through fear and intimidation while change agents utilize organic talent, morality and intelligence to promote growth for themselves as well as others.
Transformation is not only about reaching a destination… because one NEVER arrives. After we overcome one thing, or make progress on something else, another challenge and goal stands before us. This is why change agents understand the progress we make along the journey is invaluable. The hard truth is we are all either planting (changing) or picking seeds in this garden we call life. WHO are you fighting FOR & what are YOU really fighting about? The answers to these questions should help you to discover the horror a chaos brings forth and the beauty the change agent makes in spite of it.
