Vulnerability is a
Display of Courage
2 Corinthians 12:9
God tells Paul
"My power is made perfect in weakness"
Most would not associate the characteristic of vulnerability or failure with leadership. Perhaps this is why we become so dismayed when leaders, aka people, show us their flaws. The world has incorrectly associated leadership with popularity, and power with perfection, both of which are wordly traits. The truth is, no one or noTHING on this earth is absolute. Failure is literally part of the building process.
Being vulnerable is a highly risky behavior. Some might say it is even a toxic trait- being so open about your challenges. It's easy to be honest when everything goes right...
not so much when our backs are up against the wall. Nevertheless, our souls requires transparency in order to cultivate growth!
Vulnerability causes you to wear your ❤️ on your sleeve and be real about things that ordinary people won't. It requires a no holds barred conversation of sincerity, in the most sensitive set of circumstances. It means raising your hand when you are afraid, when you fail and when you aren't feeling your best. It means saying what you mean and meaning what you say! Right or Wrong. Good and Bad.
Sadly, faking it til you make it has become a way of life for some instead of a survival skill. Think about it- Who embraces vulnerability? The President? Your Pastor? Your family or friends? Your coworkers? YOU??
Likely Not.
This is because the world doesn't teach us to value vulnerability. In those rare instances when we do witness glimpses of vulnerabilities from others, it doesn't take long for us to reject them while we "spill the tea". We cant wait to tell "so-in-so" what "such in such" said or reveal the challenges they might be going thru. It's as if we relish in dishing the dirt on others. We see vulnerability as a sign of weakness when in fact it is strength!
Being willing to sit with folks
( including self ) when they are at their worst, empowers you to stand with them when they succeed. That's ❤️. That's growth. That is vulnerability.
EVERY great leader has experienced hardships, rejection and failure in some form or fashion including Jesus himself. Even diamonds are created in the core of earth (dirt)! History has repeatedly shown us that human leadership is created the same way.
THE Art of LEADERSHIP
You don't need me to tell you how people are these days. Many are all about WHAT they have, WHAT they want, or WHAT things they are trying to accomplish. WHO is talking about the individual THEY are striving to BECOME? I rarely hear parents say they are striving to be good parents by teaching their kids right from wrong, or trying to raise them to become good decent human beings. What I do hear them discuss regularly is, WHAT they are buying or doing. Don't misconstrue my words; somethings we need and deserve to accomplish certain tasks but THINGS by themselves are not the measure of a man. Not a shread of confidence, courage or intellect is required to brag about ( or lie about) being puffed up. That's average, simpleton behavior.
When I think about the story of Jesus, I never considered the vulnerability that the cross represents. As the story is told, they stretched HIM wide and hung him HIGH for ALL to see. Naked. Hurting. Dying And... VULNERABLE!!
Have you ever stopped to wonder why the story was told
that way??
The BIBLE could have been written in an entirely different manner. You don't think God, the RULER of the earth and CREATOR of ALL MEN could have bragged? Not only could He have easily boasted about his unlimitedless power but unlike humans, every bit of it would have been true!
What does this really teach us about the importance of vulnerability and the art leadership?
