My Faith, My Hijab, My Crown

Let's talk about it. Let's address it. Let's clear the air.

Let's introduce Islam.

It's a popular religion, but it's also a misunderstood religion. Many people who follow Islam are practicing Muslims, but often we forget that we are human, and humans make mistakes. We are not perfect. Unfortunately, just like any religion, Islam is often judged by how its followers apply their faith rather than by the faith itself.

A lot of times, when I hear what others are saying about Islam, and I take the time to fact-check it, I find that much of it is incorrect.

Islam is an Arabic word that means peace. It is a very deep religion and is part of the Abrahamic faith. Muslims follow the laws and guidance written in the Qur'an (the Holy Book), and its teachings remain relevant to both the old ways of life and the modern world. It is very important to understand it.

We live in a time when education is readily available, yet many of us lack the desire or energy to study and learn about things ,,,before judging them. This includes Islam.

Growing up, I felt proud to be a Muslim in America. Now that I am 30 years old, I sometimes feel a quiet sense of shame, a silent guilt, and a tug at my heart. Yet at the same time, I feel pride and a sense of justice that cannot be spoken away.

I wear a scarf, a head covering. There have been times when my life was threatened because of it. It is a topic that many people have strong feelings, thoughts, and beliefs about. I simply wish people would not hate me for a covering I wear on my head.

In this day and age, in a world where information is easily accessible, I wish people would take the time to learn rather than judge someone without knowing them. I truly believe that, as Americans, we should all be able to practice our faith and beliefs with respect and dignity.

I also feel that we need to address a common misconception: Islam is not a country. Yet when people see someone dressed in an Islamic manner, they are often told to "go back to their country."

I have been told this multiple times, even though my great-grandfather was Native American from the Cherokee Tribe, and my great-grandmother was German. Why should I have to prove any of this?

I love America as a Muslim. I was born here. This is my home. I do my part. I pick up trash when I see it on the roads. I pay my taxes. I care about my community. I love my people and my country. I am proud to be an American.

I should not have to prove my loyalty or defend my place in my own home simply because my religion is misunderstood.

We should not judge people based on their skin color or faith. This is America, and that is what makes us great. Our nation was built on freedom, justice, and the right for people to live according to their beliefs.

Here is my personal experience of how Islam has helped make me a better person and a better American.

  1. I believe in justice. As an American, I feel this is important because our entire system is built on fairness and equal justice for all.

  2. I believe in charity. In Islam, charity is not optional—it is a responsibility. We are taught to care for those who are struggling, help our neighbors, support our loved ones, and make sure people have food, safety, and dignity.

As Allah says in the Qur'an:

"Establish prayer and give zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves—you will find it with Allah." (Qur'an 2:110)

Charity in Islam even extends to animals. We are taught to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, and make sure no living soul suffers when we have the ability to help.

Education is also highly important. God has made it clear that we should seek knowledge. Men and women alike are encouraged to learn, study, research, and think critically. We can seek guidance from scholars, but we should not blindly follow without understanding.

These are just a few examples of the values of my faith that I practice as an American, and I am proud to do so.

Islam is positive. It is rooted in love, compassion, mercy, and generosity. Like everyone else, we are learning every day. It is a beautiful religion that encourages kindness, understanding, and service to others.

I hope you can relate to my experience and hear me out. Take some time to learn about Islam and do your own research. You may find it interesting.

I would love for people to approach any subject with an open mind rather than tunnel vision. Open your eyes, open your heart, and give us a chance.
