Who gives a fuck what you love - What matters is what the people love you for doing!
Quote from Better Man Musical Film

WARNING: This post contains some minor spoilers relating to *the movie Better Man)
Who are you when nobody is looking?
The essence of who we are follows us wherever we go. Sometimes, it isn't easy to define who we are. We often subconsciously try to live up to the standards imposed by others or the expectations we have of ourselves.
The film Better Man explores the life and rise to fame of pop star Robbie Williams. In one memorable scene, Robbie sings I Did It My Way by Frank Sinatra with his father. As they watch the icon perform on television, both are filled with joy. However, when young Robbie accidentally knocks over the antenna, disrupting the coverage, his father becomes irate. He orders Robbie to stop singing and go to his room.
Robbie is crushed.
But this scene reveals something much deeper.

While they both perform, their intentions differ. Young Robbie enjoys singing, but most importantly, he cherishes the moment with his dad. When the father becomes annoyed at the television mishap, we see that this "performance" holds different meanings for each character.
Throughout the film, Robbie struggles to balance who he is with what he wants. This often clashes with who others, including his father, expect him to be. One moment, he radiates greatness, and they love it. The next, he exudes confidence, and they hate it. He can joke around, and the audience loves it. But in another setting, the same joke falls flat.
Changing the Response
It is impossible to please everyone all the time! It's easy to say, "I don't care what others think or expect of me," but this is often a quick response. We should be mindful of our impact on our immediate environment and those we interact with.
Where does this line begin and end?
How do you balance being a decent human being while also considering the feelings and expectations of others, all while remaining true to yourself? Who or what takes priority, and when? This question may seem simple until someone you love or respect expects you to be someone you are not or to do something you truly do not want to do.
Family?
Employees/Employer?
Friends?
Constituents?
The Public at Large?
Who Gives a Fuck What You Love?
From watching this movie, I discovered that there isn't a straightforward answer to this question. People, situations, and experiences come into our lives for a reason or a season. No matter what you do, say, or even if you choose to remain silent, someone will eventually take issue with it. If you adjust to every complaint, you will never reach your destination!
The best answer is: we do not owe others anything except for being authentic, decent, and true! All we have are the choices we make, aimed at making us a better person than we were the day before.
The Journey of Self-Discovery
Self-discovery is a continuous journey. As we navigate through life, we encounter various influences. These influences can shape our decisions and perspectives. However, it is essential to remain grounded in our values.
Understanding Your Values
Understanding your core values is crucial. These values guide your actions and decisions. They help you stay true to yourself. Reflect on what matters most to you. Is it family, career, or personal growth? Identifying these values can provide clarity in challenging situations.
Embracing Authenticity
Embracing authenticity means being true to yourself. It involves expressing your thoughts and feelings honestly. This can be challenging, especially when faced with external pressures. However, authenticity fosters genuine connections with others. It allows you to attract people who appreciate you for who you are.
Navigating Expectations
Expectations can come from various sources. Family, friends, and society often impose their beliefs on us. Learning to navigate these expectations is vital for personal growth.
Setting Boundaries
Setting boundaries is essential for maintaining your mental health. It allows you to prioritize your needs without feeling guilty. Communicate your limits clearly to others. This will help them understand your perspective and respect your choices.
Finding Balance
Finding balance between your desires and others' expectations is an ongoing process. It requires self-awareness and reflection. Regularly assess your feelings and motivations. This practice will help you stay aligned with your true self.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the journey of self-discovery is complex. It involves understanding who you are, navigating expectations, and embracing authenticity. Remember that you do not owe anyone anything except for being true to yourself. The choices you make should lead you to become a better person each day.
