How the Federal Shutdown Hurts the Homeless

Last year, in the Grant Pass court case, the supreme court made it constitutional to criminalize homelessness. This year, The President signed an executive order that allows the Federal Government to arrest, detain or forcibly institutionalize homeless persons. Since this time, over 300 bills have been introduced to criminalize homelessness.... and 200+ of those bills have passed.
Now, as the Federal Shutdown lingers on, this further hinders the unhoused from receiving the help they need. Funds are being withheld, reduced or flat our denied for housing vouchers and other subsidaries. SNAP and Wic funds are still available but are at serious risk of being axed, especially if this shutdown lingers. Homeless Shelters are non-profit organizations, which rely on Federal funding to operate. As the shutdown lingers, this will drastically reduce shelter funding, which will diminish their ability to help current and future housed people. Keep in mind, most shelters were already at capacity; the government shutdown only further burdens these overwhelmed systems and services.
WHERE IS LEADERSHIP on This Issue?
Homelessness is one of those issues that should unite everyone, because every living human being NEEDS a place to stay. Housing is a NECESSITY and not a luxury.
