How was your Labor Day? I trust everyone had a great time with friends and family as we celebrated the last official holiday of this summer season. Yesterday, as I had the rare privilege to relax, I gave some thought to the significance of Labor Day, and the working-class movement.
How the Working-Class Keeps American Communities Thriving
No matter what activity you engaged in over this summer, the working class made it possible! Whether you went out to a restaurant, on a vacation, spent time at a local beach or even stayed at home- the whole of these things was made possible by a working-class member of society.
The significance of the labor movement is overlooked. Laborers are the reason why we eat; they are the ones who grow/plant/pick and prepare our foods. Laborers are the reason we travel; they are the people who serve us at our accommodations. Laborers even build our homes and businesses. Laborers aka working people, are the sole reason why we enjoy most of what we have. Organizers serve an important role too, because they help to bring attention to the working class and ensure they are treated with decency and respect according to our nation's laws. Without organizers there would be no Labor Day! Organizing is about bringing people together but more importantly; it is about serving the needs of others.
The Purpose of Organizing and Protest
Years ago, when I first became active in protesting and advocacy work, several contested the purpose of such activities. It would be nice if we were all readers, active members of our communities and took the time to seek out knowledge for themselves, but the truth is many of us do not. This is the overall purpose of organizing and protesting; to bring attention to an issue that affects the overlooked.
Laor day is just one of many examples of this. Thousands of community organizing events were hosted across our country on yesterday, providing a voice to the voiceless and support to those who feel ignored. When everyday people unite, anything is possible!!
Building a thriving community is a shared responsibility. Let's start by celebrating the working class. Happy Belated Labor Day!!
